Someone makes a suggestion that LJ deal with the spambot problem by bringing back invite codes, in a modified form.

I don't know if most people are going to support it, though, because while the spam accounts are clearly a big problem for the Abuse Prevention team, now that the spambots have toned down their interaction with legitimate users, they've become much less of a problem for regular users of the service. In other words, if from the user perspective spambots are not a problem, they will be less inclined to support measures which will inconvenience them (them=the users).

I wonder how much of a problem these bots are? IMHO, a lot of these problems could be solved by making the Starter Accounts be friends-locked only, rather than private only, and then be made able to make public posts via code. (IMHO, if this is implemented, it shouldn't be called an "invite code" because that will confuse people. What about "validation code"?)

These accounts, though, might encourage more friends-locked only journals, which IIRC are said to be on the rise anyway? (Someone was saying that, no idea how true that is.)
