Urgh, looks like Google Checkout no longer wants to do business w/ Dreamwidth because DW allows adult content on the site. I'm confused why Paypal then does business with Livejournal, considering that LJ allows adult content on their site as well.

What is the deal with these services? Do they define 'adult content' as 'any site which does not specifically prohibit adult content'? (But then, why LJ?) Anyway, hopefully DW will soon find a credit card processor which allows for adult content.

I think it's the specific adult content that is being objected to by whatever group of trolls is doing this. So LJ was willing to cave to them (or a similar group) in Strikethrough and perhaps they never took it as far as contacting Paypal, etc. whereas the trolls escalated and contacted DW's hosting and Paypal (and later Google Checkout) when DW refused to cave.

Doesn't LJ require you to put an adult content warning on posts with adult content?

It's sort of a 'don't ask, don't tell' thing? From what I've read, it seems that the amount of adult content doesn't necessarily extend only to out and out porn, but also to say, sites selling sex toys.

So why was it that LJ changed their policy later, I wonder?

I'm not sure if it is a rule... I know that LJ abuse will do that if someone complains, however, even if that is true, that still means adult content exists. Most sites that are real adult sites do have a warning on the front page, and I assume that Paypal wouldn't allow them either.

unfortunately it is very true about chargebacks and non-tangible adult content. I used to work customer service for a Very Large US Cable Company in the late 1990s and we had a ridiculous amount of people try to claim that "I didn't order that porn on pay-per-view."
