Importing etc.

Huh, discussion on the dw-discuss ML regarding the desire of some people to import communities is getting quite passionate.

The issue (for those of you who don't read the ML) is that currently DW allows people to import personal journals, but the importer cannot import communities. This is because it is legally dubious to for a maintainer to import entries which legally belong to someone else.

Now, DW does allow you to import comments made by other people, but because openID allows people to delete their comments, if they so desire, then it isn't as much of a legal issue. But since openID accounts cannot make posts (on a technical level), then there is no way to do something similar with a community. In any event, it also seems like people would be much more incensed about their posts in a comm being imported sans explicit authorization.

Personally, I chose not to import because if I ever need to reference an old post, I can reconstruct it from my LJarchive. Since I can't search my old entries, it would still be difficult to find even if I did import.

Someone I was talking to thinks that having the Granted Access list increases a feeling of exclusion. That is, all of the people with hurt feelings that they weren't granted access. A long time ago, I asked on the ML, if we could hide our Access list.

I was answered here. The reason is because users must potentially know, if they are commenting on a locked post, who else could POTENTIALLY see the post, before they comment.

However, the person I was talking to suggested to me this idea: However, what if you could see this information (who is on the Access List) ONLY if you had already been granted Access?

In other words, that part of the profile is only visible if you already have been granted Access (in the same way that my email address or birthday can be shown only to those on my Access list?) If the only case in which someone must see the list of who has been granted Access is if they have already been granted it, why bother making that part of the profile public?

Also, I don't see a reason for showing who I have Access to on my profile. There doesn't seem to be a problem not displaying it would cause.

I've switched to the new Zesty theme.

Some notes:
If you don't want the entries on your readpage to be all collapsed, you should go to Miscellaneous under Customize Style and switch the show entries expanded.

To change the favicon (that's the little icon that shows up in the tab), you can an image URL in. I entered in the URL of my default icon. Nifty! IIRC you couldn't do that on LJ.
